Fluorite, rich in calcium fluoride, is the main fluoride mineral. It is used as a flux for the manufacture of steel, aluminum and opalescent glass. Its low refractive index and dispersion make it a material of choice for manufacturing apochromatic lenses for optical instruments. It owes its name to Galeani Napione, from the Latinfluere(to blend).
